The Friendships You’ll Make While Studying Abroad in Sydney (And How to Keep Them)
Studying abroad isn’t just about the places you go; it’s about the people you share them with. Just ask Corbyn B., 16, and Pia L., 17, two students who spent three weeks in Sydney through CIEE’s Australian Wildlife Conservation program. Assigned as roommates on day one, they quickly turned a chance pairing into a close friendship.
I had the chance to sit down with Corbyn and Pia during their final week in Sydney to hear about the memories they’ve made, what it’s like to build a friendship abroad, and how they plan to stay connected after returning home.
How did you first meet, and what were your first impressions of each other?
Pia: We first met online through a group chat, but we actually met in real life at the airport. I first found out about her because her flight was delayed, then she came, and everyone screamed her name. I went up to her and introduced myself, and we started talking. We walked around the airport as a big group. When we got back, we played a card game while we waited for our flight to board. We hoped we could sit together on the plane, but unfortunately, we couldn't. Once we landed, we found each other again. We found out we were roommates, and we were both really happy.
Corbyn: I was kind of looking for people who weren't in groups already, and Pia didn't have a group, so I knew it was my opportunity. She was kind of quiet but laughed at all my jokes, so I knew she was right for me. Pia made me feel really funny from the start.
What was it like to be roommates at first?
Corbyn: It was the first or second night, and we just started yapping.
Pia: We went to bed at like twelve am. That's when we got really close. Ever since then, we've been like besties.
Corbyn: We're both a little messy, so it works out thankfully.
What have been some of your favorite memories together in Sydney?
Pia: Maybe our Blue Mountains hike because we stuck towards the back. Both of us had such a good time, and I just remember we wouldn't stop laughing, no matter what we said. I couldn't stop smiling. We took pictures at each photo spot, so we have pictures all throughout the hike.
Corbyn: I also liked the beekeeping day because we sat next to each other and enjoyed each other's company while goofing off a little.
Where is home for both of you in the U.S.?
Corbyn: North Carolina
Pia: Chicago
What is your plan for staying in touch after you go home?
Corbyn: I am taking her home with me.
Pia: But realistically, probably texting, sending pictures, Instagram reels, and Face-Timing. And I might be doing college visits in North Carolina, so I might visit Corbyn.
Do you think studying abroad helped you learn how to build strong friendships quickly?
Pia: Yes, for sure.
Corbyn: I remember that I was really nervous about making friends when I first got here, but within three hours we were already laughing our heads off.
Pia: I think going abroad without knowing anyone is a fresh way to make friends. Going into it, allowing yourself to be vulnerable and out of your comfort zone, allows you to make friendships that can change your life.
What advice would you give to other students about making and keeping friends on program?
Corbyn: Be willing to accept fault, but also be willing to put yourself out there and try new things. Your trip is not going to go how you think it is going to go, but it is going to be better. Be flexible, be understanding, and have empathy, and that is a great way to make friends. Also, it helps if you're funny.
Pia: And you find someone who laughs at your jokes.
