Saint-Malo
On Saturday, students traveled to the walled seaside city of Saint-Malo. Students explored the shops, ate kouign amann and ice cream, and enjoyed the beach. Some students even swam, even though it was only 65 degrees!
We learned about corsaires, or pirates that were operating on behalf of the French crown. The youngest corsaires were around 9, while the captain was usually only 19 or 20 years old! Battles would last until one ship lost its flag.
Students also learned about the history of the dogs on Saint-Malo's seal. Giant mastiffs were released after curfew to patrol the city, and the dogs are still seen on all of the manhole covers in Saint-Malo today.
