Passing Time With Mallorquines
Last week, our students had the opportunity to meet local high schoolers in order to better understand the local culture from a perspective of someone their own age. Our kids have taken advantage of the opportunity to enhance their Spanish-speaking abilities with the Mallorquines (inhabitants of the island).
Yesterday, we walked from Plaza España to a famous restaurant here in Mallorca, named "Can Joan de s'Aigo." It is one of the oldest restaurants here on the island, it's history dating back to 1700 CE. Joan de s'Aigo was the name of the owner of the restaurant from it's beginnings. His contributions to developing what we now know as ice cream, along with the productions of hot chocolate and ensaimadas, has led Joan de s'Aigo to be recognized as one of the oldest, if not first, 'chocolatiers' in Europe.
The kids were able to have the opportunity to eat both an ensaimada and ice cream yesterday at the restaurant with some of their local Mallorquin friends. The fan favorite was the ice cream, but everything was very delicious.
