Orientation: New Place and Culture
Asalam Alaikom mn Maghreb
After arriving in a new country our students took on their first two days here in Mohammedia. On Monday July 11th students got a brief overview of Moroccan culture, history and program logistics. They got to explore their new host city through a guided tour. During the tour they had a chance to see places like the old Kasbah, places where they can exchange money, send postcards, grab some delicious moroccan food during their free time and more. Later that afternoon for lunch they were greeted with some traditional Moroccan Tajine.
Today Tuesday July 12th students arrived this morning ready to take on the new day. They started their Moroccan Arabic class with their teacher Haddou. They also had a workshop on cultural awareness and privilege led by Madiha our Program Director. Students then participated in reflection activities to reflect on their own cultural privilege. Later that evening we went to Dar Chabab, a local community center for youths. They were able to practice some of the basic Arabic phrases that they have learned with the kids at the community center. Excited voices filled the room as they said phrases like Asalam Alaikom, labas, alhamdulilah, and more.
Tomorrow brings a new day and new challenges for our amazing students to overcome.
