My Summer In Japan - Meet Global Navigator Khang
Meet Khang, a senior from Boston Latin Academy who spent last summer studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan, through our Language & Culture program! From temple visits to playing Mario Kart with his host siblings, Khang made unforgettable memories while leveling up his Japanese and exploring life in Tokyo.
Khang also took some time to answer some of the most common questions students have about high school summer programs. Here’s what he shared:
Q: How did you avoid feeling overwhelmed in a new home and country?
A: At first, it was overwhelming, but over time, it got easier. Instead of stressing, I focused on having fun. My host family was really sweet and welcomed me right away. I felt like I was a part of their family.
Q: What was your favorite moment studying abroad in Japan?
A: It would have to be my little host sister's piano recital! Not only was this my first-ever recital, but it was for someone I got very close to during the program.
Q: How were the language classes?
A: I personally already took Japanese for four years before, so most of the class was review for me. But lots of the phrases and vocab taught were very useful for everyday conversation!
Q: What was the CIEE application process like?
A: It’s mainly general information about yourself, a few short essays, and some short forms. I submitted my application early, so I received my decision and my scholarship in December.
Q: Is studying abroad worth the money?
A: I think it was worth it since only 2% of high school students even study abroad, I met a lot of awesome people, and I almost got the Seal of Biliteracy!
The Global Seal of Biliteracy is a universally recognized, portable credential that certifies a student’s language skills, regardless of where they live or whether they have already graduated.
Q: How much free time do you have during your program?
A: About two to three afternoons each week, but usually on the weekends there was time to go out with friends and explore the day.
Q: What was your flight like? Where did you leave from?
A: I chose the chaperoned flight because it was the cheaper option. I flew from Boston to Newark, where I met up with my group to fly to Tokyo together. I personally don't like airplanes, but it was 13 hours of movies and sleeping!
Q: How did you talk to your parents about studying abroad?
A: This was the first time I left the country without family or friends, so they were really anxious. But CIEE staff reassured them about all the safety measures that go into the programs. Plus, I got a scholarship!
Q: How does the scholarship work? What’s covered by CIEE scholarships?
A: There are two scholarships: Global Navigator (based on your family income) and Merit (based on your grades and test scores). I believe every two weeks you get a stipend for food and transportation. For all housing options, breakfast and dinner are provided at no additional cost.
* Scholarships only cover program fees, not airfare. Students can apply for scholarships directly within their CIEE application.
