Majestic Mont St. Michel
Salut!
On Wednesday we embraced the climb of 256 feet to see the Abbaye of Mt. St. Michel. While the climb was grueling at times as our feet touched cobblestones on a winding ruelle (small street) the views from the top were indeed majestic. We enjoyed an audio tour of the history of the Abbaye. The Abbaye dates from the 966 and was fortified with the exterieur wall in 1256. During France's history it has been a pilgrimage site and an active Abbaye. It was also a prison during the time of Napoleon. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979 and there are still monks and nuns who live on site. The island itself becomes inaccesible during high tide and is surrounded by areas of quicksand. It truly is a symbol of France.
