This weekend, students went on an overnight exursion to explore Bretagne. The first stop was Vannes, a city rich in history and traditions. A tour guide took us through the city and discussed the historical significance of the remparts, the architectural style of the houses, and the beautiful cathedral. Following the tour, students had free time to explore the city and the marché.

We continued on to Concarneau, a seaside city with a medieval walled city. Students stayed in an auberge de jeunesse next to the beach and enjoyed swimming in the water despite the cold temperatures. We enjoyed a meal together at the auberge and then set out as group to explore the city. The students enjoyed staying up late in the common room to play cards, listen to music, and chat.

On Sunday, students woke up early to watch the sunset together. After breakfast, we traveled to Locronan, a tiny town filled with stone buildings and shops. Students explored the shops and bought souvenirs that are typical of Bretagne, including salted caramels, traditional pastries such as kouign amann, sea salt, and honey. We met for lunch at a crêperie and enjoyed two galettes and a crêpe, as well as local apple juice.

For our last stop of the trip, we visited the Château de Trévarez, a castle with beautiful gardens. The castle was built in 1908 by a politician who wanted to show off modern day inventions and technology in his grandiose estate. The estate features art nouveau furnishings and bathing areas, which were avant-garde for the time. The castle was occupied by the Nazis during the second world war and was bombed in 1944. Remnants of the destruction remain, which creates a unique contrast between the beautiful decor and the burnt and destroyed parts of the building.

Students loved exploring different parts of Bretagne and learning about the fascinating history of each region!
