Estu-What!?
Today in Setúbal we explored a local estuary. An estuary is the area where salty ocean water meets salt-free water from a river or stream. In Portugal, there are many estuaries--as the country borders the Atlantic Ocean. Today we visited a local estuary and observed first-hand what we have been learning about in classes for the past few days. First, we saw a grain mill that is powered by water as the low tide becomes high tide and then returns back to low tide. Then we went on walk to see how sea salt is harvested an what exactly a sea salt mine ecosystem looks like. Finally we went on a nature walk and saw lots of different types of plants (wild grain and wild carrots among the most interesting, in my opinion). We even learned that cork grows on trees!!
