En Parlant du Parlement
On Tuesday, students visited the Parlement de Bretagne to learn about the French legal system, the history of the building, and the meaning of the beautiful artwork that decorates the building. In class, students are learning how to describe architectural details and discover and report on historical events.
Students asked questions about the signicance of decorative details, such as the letter N that represented Napoleon, statues with swords representing force and balances representing justice, and the symbol of the hermine that is seen throughout both the building and Bretagne.
A fire destroyed part of the building in 1720 and remnants of the fire are still visible to this day. Students searched for the charred remains and found them on the stone floor and on one part of the ceiling.
We ended the tour with a debrief, with students sharing everything that they learned and connecting it to their studies in class.
