Bonalu Celebrations

It's hard to believe we are already half way through our journey! The students were given a special opportunity to observe the Bonalu celebrations at the Peddamma Temple; a unique Hindu tradition specific to Telangana (the state in which Hyderabad is located). This sacred tradition annually celebrates and honors Goddess Mahankali during July/August, where unique poojas (prayers) are performed on the first and last days of the festival and are a gesture of thanksgiving to the Mother Goddess. Students witnessed women in traditional dress carrying Brass or Earthen Pots on top of their heads which were adorned with tumeric (which holds many healing properties), Neem leaves, and a lit flame resting on the crown of the structure.

Before entering the temple, all of us were required to remove our shoes and leave our cell phones behind. We were the only foreigners who seemed to be present which made for a very eye opening and unforgettable experience. As entered the  temple, we saw families vertically balancing coins on their circumference edge, where the belief is that if it stands without tipping, a wish will be granted. We also saw families bringing offerings of coconut, flowers, saris, curd, and jewelry to the temple shrine. When exiting the temple, families proceed to a communal space where they cook a traditional meal and celebrate together within their family unit. In a separate, more private area close by, goats and chickens are blessed and offered as a sacrifice to the Goddess and the meat is prepared on the grounds. This experience was an incredible time of observation, cultural emersion and reflection for our students! It inspired them with questions and curiosity, which led to incredible learning opportunities.
