START HERE: Details & Resources
DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR FALL 2020 NEW YORK CITY INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
FRIDAY, APRIL 24TH, 2020 BY 4:00PM
Important details
- Internships are unpaid but eligible for academic credit through SUNY Potsdam. Any supplementary compensation (e.g. travel reimbursement) will be clearly outlined in the posting.
- All internships are available for at least 480 hours per semester (the minimum requirement to receive 12 credits through SUNY Potsdam). Specific start/end dates and weekly schedule can be flexible and should be worked out directly with the employer if you receive an offer.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that all academic credit paperwork and processes are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- It is not appropriate nor professional to request alternate arrangements with employers - i.e. to ask for compensation if not included, to request a summer internship, etc. Doing so will likely result in your application not being considered and will also negatively impact employers' perception of the Potsdam program as a whole.
Preparation & Application Process
Step #1
Make an appointment to see your academic advisor. Each student needs to make sure that taking a 12-credit academic internship during the Fall 2020 semester is viable. Does this 12-credit internship fit into your academic program/major? Please keep in the mind that these 12 credits are Upper Division Credits and go toward the 45 UD credits required for your bachelor’s degree.
Step #2
Peruse the available internships on the opportunities board. Be sure to check out the company’s website and familiarize yourself with the details and suggested qualifications for each internship position.
TIP: Use an Excel document to organize your internship choices! We also suggest that you right click + "open link in new tab" to keep your options clearly organized, and you can use the Ctrl+F function to search for relevant terms (e.g. "marketing" or "nonprofit") from the main page.
Step #3
Prepare your resume and cover letter for each position that interests you. It is recommended that you tailor your resume and cover letter to address each unique internship opportunity.

Step #4
Have your resume and cover letter reviewed by a professional staff member in the Lougheed Center for Applied Learning, or a faculty member of your choice.
Step #5
Apply to the internship opportunities that interest you. Use the email link included in the internship description to apply directly to an employer and do not change the subject line. Employers will be expecting applications from SUNY Potsdam students in a certain format and altering this may result in your application being incorrectly filtered. Be sure to include all application materials (e.g. cover letter, work samples) asked for in the internship posting. Employers will only contact candidates with whom they would like to set up an interview, and may do so anytime through August 14th, 2020.
Step #6
Practice interviewing.

Step #7
Register for backup classes for the Fall 2020 semester in case you are not selected for an internship in New York City.
Class registration for the Fall 2020 semester will be April 7th - April 10th. Each student should register for at least 12-15 credits of classes for the Fall 2020 semester. If you are offered an internship position in New York City any time between April 10th and August 14th, you can web-drop your selected backup class schedule and then register for your 12-credit academic internship.
Step #8
If you are selected for one of the available Fall 2020 internship positions in New York City, you are required to report an internship for credit on BearTracker.
