Art Gallery Internship - Onishi Gallery

Company overview

Onishi Gallery is located in the heart of New York City’s gallery district and features the work of contemporary Japanese artists across a range of media including ceramics, metalwork, lacquer, glass, sculpture, and painting. Committed to the promotion of international artists and cultural exchange, the Gallery works closely with New York-based organizations such as Japan Society, Asia Week New York, the Japanese Art Society of America (JASA), and online art platforms such as Artsy. 

Internship overview

Intern will work directly with existing Gallery staff (including owner, assistant director, and assistants) to learn about and support the smooth running of a contemporary art gallery. Intern will become well versed in current exhibitions as well as any art fairs or special projects to which the Gallery is contributing. Exact focus and responsibilities can be tailored to the interests and qualifications of the intern. Potential tasks include: 

  • Taking and managing inventory 
  • Opening and closing gallery (as responsibility progresses) 
  • Preparing for new exhibitions 
  • General gallery operations and administration

  • Interest in contemporary Japanese art 
  • Interest in gallery industry 
  • Reliability and integrity 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Suggested majors: fine arts, art history, Asian/Japanese studies, museum/gallery studies
