CIEE Security Alert - Morocco

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake occurred in Chichaoua Province at around 23:11 Sept. 8. The epicenter was about 56 km (35 miles) west of Oukaimeden. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 18 km (11 miles), and strong shaking was probably felt in areas in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter, with light-to-moderate shaking likely felt in other parts of Morocco. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is possible near the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. Locations primarily impacted by this alert include Agadir, Marrakesh, and Taghazout.
