Biography

  • Annie Gibson completed her PhD in Latin American Studies at Tulane University. Her areas of research specialization include Cuban and Brazilian performance cultures, immigration, travel, and tourism studies. She has published widely, including two books, one of which won the 2015 J.B Jackson book prize for contribution of the year to the historical and ethnic geography of the United States. She teaches a diverse range of courses in Spanish and Portuguese languages, literatures, and cultures and has directed and taught on Tulane programs abroad including those to Cuba, Costa Rica, and Brazil. Annie leads the Office of Study Abroad’s efforts to promote intercultural learning at Tulane. Assisted by the OSA’s two professional study abroad advisors, and in collaboration with international and returned study abroad students, and colleagues at the Center for Global Education, Annie works to ensure that the entire study abroad process---from recruitment and advising through students’ experiences in the field and upon return to Tulane---align with best practices in the field and the OSA’s learning goals for study abroad.
