The Power of Disconnecting to Reconnect: Finding Presence at Camp

When I arrived at camp as a first-time counselor, I wasn’t sure what to expect around the whole “no screens” situation. In today’s world, devices are everywhere — so I was curious how campers would handle going completely unplugged. Would they miss their phones? Would it be hard to keep their attention without screens? What I discovered went far beyond my expectations: disconnecting here meant reconnecting in ways I hadn’t imagined.

Because campers aren’t allowed to bring phones at all, I wondered how this full break from screens would feel. One moment that really stuck with me was when an older camper admitted she missed having a phone — but after a few days, she forgot all about it. She got so wrapped up in the games, conversations, and rhythm of camp life that her phone simply slipped out of her mind.

But this wasn’t just about technology — it was about presence. Without screens, campers and counselors alike relearned how to really listen, to truly talk, and to be fully engaged. The constant buzz of notifications was replaced by the quiet sounds of the forest, and storytelling became our nightly ritual.

Watching this as a new counselor was eye-opening. Disconnecting here isn’t just about turning off devices — it’s about reclaiming attention, forming genuine connections, and savoring the moment. Suddenly, a hike, a campfire song, or a sunset felt richer beause everyone was truly present.

Now, as Session 1 wraps up, I’m grateful for this experience. Camp has shown me that stepping away from the digital world opens the door to real connection — with campers, with nature, and with myself. It’s a lesson I’ll carry long after the phones come back out.
