My American Internship: Summer K. of the United Kingdom
Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Summer K. of the United Kingdom served as a front-desk intern at the Omni Amelia Island Resort in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
I can honestly say this year has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. I've gained hands-on experience in the hospitality industry, worked with guests from all over the world, and learned how to remain professional and solution focused, even in high-pressure situations. I've had to think on my feet, adapt quickly, and hold myself accountable – all skills I know will serve me well in my future career.
Professionally, I worked on the front-desk team, where I learned how to use the Opera platform and handle real guest situations on a daily basis, as well as supporting other resort operations when needed. I built confidence, improved my communication and problem-solving skills, and learned how to manage a wide range of guest needs, special requests, and unexpected challenges. There were definitely tough moments, but I've come away with a much deeper understanding of what it takes to work in a high-end, fast-paced hospitality environment.
For a few months, I also lived on the property, which gave me even more insight into the guest experience. Being immersed in the resort lifestyle meant I could confidently recommend places, activities, and hidden gems – not just as a front-desk agent, but as someone who genuinely knew what made the property special. I didn't just offer suggestions – I painted an experience for guests to enjoy, and many did! This led to me receiving positive mentions in Medallia guest feedback reports, which made me feel proud of the connections I'd built and the service I delivered.
I also learned how to stay calm under pressure, work effectively as part of a team, and bring positive energy to every shift – even during those back-to-back AMs and PMs! (Mids were the best!) One of the most rewarding parts of the job was working with such a diverse team. I got to observe and learn about cultures from all over – from Indian and Filipino, to Polish and Hungarian – all brought together with the warmth and kindness that's so typical of American hospitality. As the only British team member, I felt proud to be recognised for being polite and friendly, and I felt truly appreciated.
Outside of work, this year gave me the chance to live life to the fullest. I went on a cruise to the Bahamas with one of my colleagues – the perfect break after months of hard work. I also had the honour of attending a beautiful wedding while I was here – and even made the wedding cake, which was such a special experience!
This year has really shown me that I can build a life anywhere. The world genuinely feels like my oyster now. I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity and everything it's taught me. I've made amazing memories, grown in ways I didn't expect, and built friendships I believe will last a lifetime.
