My American Internship: Sinogcobo M. of South Africa

Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Sinogcobo M. of South Africa served as a food and beverage intern at the Montage Deer Valley in Park City, Utah.

Coming to the United States as a South African has been both an eye-opening and transformative experience. I arrived with expectations shaped by movies, media, and stories, but quickly learned that America is far more complex, diverse, and nuanced than any single narrative can capture.

Academically and professionally, the American environment challenged me to think independently and speak up. I was encouraged to express my opinions freely, even when they differed from others. That confidence has become one of the most valuable tools I’ve gained from this experience.

Of course, there were moments of homesickness, the absence of familiar accents, food, and the unique South African humor. But each encounter whether at work or during my free time with friends helped me grow more adaptable and open-minded.

My time in the U.S. has deepened my appreciation for my roots while also expanding my global perspective. As a South African who was in America, I’ve learned that identity can be both anchored and fluid, and that understanding others begins with curiosity and not judgment.
