My American Internship: Juan S. of France
Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Juan S. of France served as a graduate internship fellow at Lifespan Research Institute in Mountain View, California.
When I think about my time in the United States through CIEE, I don’t just remember the science, the nature, the incredible colleagues, or the vibrant Californian lifestyle – though all of that was amazing. What truly defined this experience for me was the perfect balance between professional growth, meaningful human connection, and unexpected moments that became lifelong memories.
California welcomed me with open arms. Between cutting-edge research and collaborative work with brilliant minds, I found time to hike coastal cliffs, explore redwood forests, and enjoy local events that made me feel like more than just a visitor. I felt part of a community. The diversity and kindness of the people around me reminded me that borders are just lines on a map. The friendships I formed here are real, deep, and enduring.
But perhaps the most powerful part of my journey was the opportunity to reconnect with my roots. Thanks to the flexibility of my internship, I was able to take a short vacation to visit family in Wisconsin. It was a dream I didn’t think would happen during my time in the U.S. Seeing a completely different side of the country, experiencing Midwest nature, and sharing quiet, warm moments with my loved ones was a gift. That time reminded me why we work so hard: to share life with the people who matter most.
This journey gave me more than skills. It gave me stories, connections, and a renewed sense of gratitude. I came to the U.S. to grow as a professional, and I’m leaving with something even more valuable: memories I’ll carry with me forever.
