My American Internship: Johan K.

Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Johan K. of Denmark worked as a quality assurance (QA) intern at Cocojune in Greene, New York.

During the week, I worked in a professional environment that constantly challenged me to grow. My internship was more than just a learning opportunity – it was a crash course in American work culture. I was encouraged to take initiative, contribute ideas in meetings, and ask thoughtful questions. Each task – whether drafting a report, collaborating with a team, or presenting a project – gave me new skills and greater confidence. The open communication and fast pace pushed me in the best possible way, and I felt like I was learning something new every day.

Then came the weekends. While the city quieted down, I found myself drawn to the outdoors. Alongside a friend, I explored the underrated beauty of upstate New York – its forest trails, hidden waterfalls, and peaceful mountaintops. One of my favorite moments was reaching the summit of a mountain and looking out over miles of green. It was a reminder of balance: how important it is to step back, breathe, and reflect.

This experience taught me that growth doesn’t just happen in offices or classrooms. It happens when you combine new responsibilities with exploration, when you open yourself up to both people and places. I came for the internship – but I left with so much more.
