My American Internship: Brian D.

Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Brian D. of Zimbabwe worked as a food and beverage intern at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay in Kauai, Hawaii.

My American dream adventure took place on the breathtaking island of Kauai, Hawaii. I had been accepted into an internship program with the renowned 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay in Kauai. It was a dream come true – a unique blend of professional experience, cultural immersion, and personal growth set in one of the most stunning destinations in the world.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is known not just for its luxury, but for its deep commitment to sustainability and connection to Hawaiian culture. As a food and beverage intern, I was deeply immersed in every aspect of the department to make sure we delivered memorable guest experiences and hospitality rooted in aloha.

Outside the workplace, I explored the cultural richness of Kauai – visits to places like the Waimea Canyons, Poipu Beach, mountain hiking. I was also spending time lying on the sand beach in Hanalei Bay, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, volunteering at community events, learning basic Hawaiian language phrases, and taking trips to nearby towns like Kapaa and Lihue. I lived with other interns from around the world, and our nightly conversations over local cuisine and takeout were filled with laughter, debates, and shared dreams.

My American internship was more than just work experience. It is a journey of discovery – of the world, of a different culture, and of myself. It reminded me that growth often comes when you step far outside your comfort zone and embrace the unknown.
