My American Internship: Alizée G.
Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Alizée G. of France served as a junior project manager at Fareva in Morton Grove, Illinois.
People often ask me, “How did you end up in the U.S.?” Honestly, sometimes I ask myself the same question!
I’m Alizée, a French engineering student doing an apprenticeship program. For the final months of my studies, my company gave me the incredible opportunity to join one of our international sites in the Chicago area. A few documents, visa appointments, and a packed suitcase later, I was on my way across the Atlantic with just my passport, my visa, and a lot of excitement.
I’ll never forget the first time I stepped into downtown Chicago. I got off the metro, looked up, and found myself surrounded by giant skyscrapers. My first feeling was just how small I suddenly felt. The city felt enormous, alive, and fast paced, but somehow, I quickly found my rhythm in it.
I’ve discovered so many unique and authentic places here, and I often catch myself walking through the streets with my head tilted up, completely in awe of this adventure I’m lucky enough to live.
This internship hasn’t only helped me improve my English and discover American culture; it’s also brought amazing people into my life. Whether it’s my colleagues at work or my roommates at home, I’ve met so many different personalities, each of them teaching me something valuable and new.
I’m only one-third of the way through my journey, but I already know that I’ll return home changed: more confident, more open-minded, incredibly grateful… and probably a few pounds heavier, because let’s be honest, I had to try everything on the menu!
Thank you, CIEE, for making this unforgettable experience possible!
