For me, living and working abroad has always been a dream of mine. I often traveled, meeting colorful people from around the world in hostels and on tours that seemed to find ways to extend their trip that was only supposed to be 2 weeks. College seemed to be a hurtle I had to clear before making the plunge, and while it wasn’t for everyone, to me college coincided with my dream. My passions which include and are not limited to: teaching, learning, volunteering, and of course to travel. So maybe like me, you dabbled in the art of switching majors! See while teaching is a passion it wasn’t at the forefront of my minds eye to be the catalysts to my present adventure, I jumped from international business to business management, art history to mathematics, and all the while traveling and wishing I’d never have to return home. It was my passion for volunteering that I tip toed towards this new reality. I did a year of service for AmeriCorps working in a high school, and while high school is not my forte, teaching and education was an exciting venture for me. The diversity I love so much on my travels, was like the diversity of my students and their learning styles, personalities, and cultures saw me adapting the curriculum to better support each student.

Side note: When I relayed, what I thought was a new-found passion to my mother, she said she always knew I’d become a teacher. “You used to create test for your friends, I always knew you’d become a teacher!” Also, to extend the irony, I come from a family of teachers. So now my major was solidified, and I obtained a BA degree in Human development with a elementary license.

So here I am, combining my loves of travel and teaching; and I’ll add in volunteering because I’m currently living rent free through Workaway, exchanging my language skills for free accommodations. (I’ll also write about some housing options to consider when considering the program) Why Spain? To capture a dream, but also to immerse myself and thrive in a new place, to relearn Spanish, and to seek out every corner of the world I can get to on a cheap ticket from Madrid. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t love to work sixteen hours a week in a new and exciting country, where naps are a thing between 2-5ish, cerveza is cheaper than water, and where little calles (streets) open to beautiful plazas of people up until 4 or 6 in the morning! So, come along there’s much to follow on this adventure we call life in Spain.
