Women for Environmental Action

Women in STEM Session II was off to a great start after safe travels! On our first day we toured campus, visited the farm, and began learning about local plants and animals. Our discussions focused on relevant technolgies used to preserve Costa Rica's natural environment and mitigate climate change. To better understand the connection between STEM and our campus, the girls participated in a scavenger hunt. Here, they searched for different tools and places on campus we will be using in our time here!

Looking for the next clue on our scavenger hunt!

Within the first few lessons, our professors Jessica and Vane had us building models of green energy sources like wind turbines and hydroelectric generators.

The girls are also working in groups on a research project to learn more about prominent women in STEM. To better understand and appreciate the culture in Costa Rica, all students are taking daily Spanish lessons! Each person is pushing themselves to understand and use the language in class, with each other, and around campus with other staff members. One of the first Spanish phrases we learned is specific to Costa Rica and expresses hapiness and excitement for life – Pura Vida!

¡Pura Vida!
