Sustainability and the Effects of Climate Change
Hike to the Farm
Students learned more about the impact that humans have on climate change. After a 10 minute hike, students visited the farm on campus and explored the old chicken coop, coffee plants, and the old greenhouse.
Class Time
Students learned that because of changes in climate, CIEE has relocated many parts of their farm to another location on campus. When students arrived back to the classroom, they created clay dioramas of glaciers and the plant and animal life found there. Students soon learned that their dioramas would be filled with ice. When asked what effect this would have on their diorama, students quickly made the connection to the rising of the sea levels due to glaciers melting!
Understanding Biodegration
Students took sustainabilty tour to learn more about how the CIEE Monteverde Campus is sustainable. Some highlights included resuing of food scraps to feed the animals on campus, using waste from the toilet systems to create energy thorugh a digester, and how the solar panels above the living spaces help to heat the water we use.
