Students' journeys to Costa Rica began from places all over the United States! While some students met up for a chaperoned flight from Miami, other travelers flew solo all the way from places like North Carolina, San Francisco, Washington D.C. etc. This traveling endeavor was no simple task, as flights were being rescheduled and canceled throughout the day. It was amazing to see these students' problem solving skills, comradery, and flexibility in action!! They remained open, communicative, and willing to ask for support. What great qualities we are witnessing already! At the airport, students played ice breaker games and met up with their roommates. The staff was super impressed that before the flight even took off, all the WIS travelers knew each other's names and at least one fun fact!

Once in beautiful Costa Rica, students and staff were taken to eat lunch at a local restaurant! Staff loved how everyone made an effort to sit next to someone they didn’t know and introduce themselves. The buffet spread was delicious! Students had potatoes, vegetables, rice, beans, and either chicken or beef with pineapple juice! Students also played a game of “the ship is sinking.” We are so proud to say that not only did we laugh until we cried but also two WIS students won some sweet prizes! At the restaurant, students were able to truly learn what it means to be living “Pura Vida.”

In Costa Rica, Pura Vida is a way of life. While it directly translates to “pure life,” it is a mindset that details being optimistic, happy, and finding joy in even the smallest moments. While in Costa Rica, students will be challenged to continue the Pura Vida attitude throughout. This shouldn’t be too hard though, especially when surrounded with beautiful landscapes and great friends!

Students arrived on campus when it was pitch black and the staff wasn’t joking when they said that the campus trip went through a windy paradise. Everyone did great but we were all so exhausted and ready for bed! Travelers were introduced to their bungalows, picked their beds (top bunk or bottom), and got to meet their critter roommates. It was lovely getting to witness WIS students playing card games together, listening to music, and even taking some hammock time to start building connections and relaxing. Every morning we are going to be up bright and early! Even on the first morning, some students took the initiative and went to watch the sunrise, grab a coffee with friends, or take a short run! The fresh fruit for breakfast, short hikes, and empowerment in being Women in Stem truly demonstrates PURA VIDA!

As we look forward, we challenge everyone to put down the electronics and open themselves up to new experiences. If you listen closely y’all will hear birds chirping, monkeys hopping between trees, and butterflies whistling in your ears. Take it all in, take deep breaths, and let's enjoy all that Monteverde has to offer! Students are excited to sing karaoke, sit by the fireplace, and watch movies in their free time- making memories that will last a lifetime! Bienvenidos Costa Rica and welcome to our brave space!
