Let the Futbol Fun begin
During the weekdays our mornings are spent working on our service project; partnering up with local NGO (Karibu Tanzania Organization) to Empower Girls Through Sports. On our first day we went on a visit to the FDC (Folk Development College) in Illula, 1 of 55 centers spread throughout the country offering vocational training courses for students. Last year the President of Tanzania passed a new law stating that if a girl gets pregnant in school she is automatically removed from the government school system and is unable to return. To provide opportunities for these girls (as well as anyone who is no longer in the standard school system) the FDC’s have started offering courses which train girls/women to become soccer coaches, referees, players and sports medicine professionals. During our time here we have the opportunity to run soccer trainings with the girls at the FDC as well as go out to varius high schools to train and help start up girls soccer teams at their schools.
