The Kuleshov Effect...and of course, Flamenco
It's Tuesday here in sunny Sevilla, and our second week is in full...Flamenco.
Yesterday, we packed the morning with film analysis and learned about the intricacies of the Kuleshov effect. Carlos had students study the power of association, and how juxtaposing two images next to eachother can drastically change the context, and therefore the message. We also watched John Cage's infamous "4'33" and found ourselves in a heated conversation on its significance, cultural impact, and underlying meaning. Then we headed to the Mercado de la Encarnación to do some filming of our own and practice our new Spanish vocabulary.
In the evening, we channled our inner Enrique Inglesias and bailamos! At the "Centro Cultural Flamenco," we learned an entire dance, complete with imaginary castanets and expressive wrist swirls. We all broke a sweat, both from complicated foot work and a hefty dose of laughter. I think it's safe to say we are all Flamenco converts now, sure to bring our new moves to the dance floor in our home countries.
"Hasta Mañana!"
