Getting to know Prague

Navigating the city

On Tuesday students joined a professional Prague tour guide in a 3-hour walk around the highlights of the center of Prague including "old town" and "new town."

While the town is called "new town" and is the youngest of the historic districts in Prague, we learned it was actually built in 1348! Highlights in new town include the architecturally beautiful Dancing House, the National Museum, and National Theatre.

Although it was a piping hot day, students managed to maintain some curiousity as we navigated the city onward to old town. The heart of old town can be found in old town square or Staroměstské náměstí, which dates back to the 10th century! During holiday season you can find wonderful Christmas and Easter markets in the bustling square.

We watched the infamous astronomical clock performance together which chimes every hour and is a popular tourist attraction. The clock dates back to 1410 and contains an astronomical dial, zodiac ring, sun tracker, moon tracker, and moving elements. Surrounding the square are several buildings of importance including Old Town Hall, St. Nicholas Cathedral, and Church of our Lady Before Týn.

After a full day packed with new knowledge, lots of socializing, and summer heat, students were ready for some free time. It is impressive to see that in less than a week, students are growing capable and confident in their ability to navigate the city! Using Google Maps or other navigation apps, students are able to find their destination and travel there using the tram or metro system and some walking.

While we always travel to excursions together, students are now able to navigate to Czech class and free time on their own in small groups and they are doing a wonderful job. Free time favorite spots have included local Thai restaurants, a delicious gelato place called Crěme de la Creme, and walking or shopping around the city.

We are looking forward to a day trip to a nearby small town on Saturday called Kutná Hora and starting the painting focused portion of the program next week!

Ahoj for now,
