First days in La Colorada
Well, we’re definitely not in Guanajuato anymore! In Guanajuato, we were used to seeing paved streets, colorful buildings, and an Oxxo on every corner. Now we are in La Colorada, a rural community about two hours away from the capital of the state. Here we are working with the Lavender Project, a local enterprise that works on lavender fields, provides a health clinic, meals, a public library, and more for their community.
Yesterday, the students were working in the lavender fields. We were weeding some of the fields as well as putting lavender together to be dried to make products such as soaps and lotions. After being outside in the morning, we headed back to the community center and learned how to embroider from some of the local women. We embroidered sleeping masks that are filled with lavender that help with sleeping. After lunch we took part in a jam cooking class and finally had an intense soccer game with some of the local women... unfortunately we lost. The students ended the day working a bit on their final projects which they will start presenting today.
