The Final Countdown.
These last three weeks have been life changing! I have seen so much growth in our students, whether it was improving their abilities to speak Spanish, or leaving their comfort zones and pushing themselves to new limits while still honoring their authentic selves. It has inspired me truly and taught me that we are all students on this journey we call life. That it takes great courage to leave our comfort zones- so in turn we must remain compassionate to each others journey.
I was most proud to see their final projects, the tremendous knowledge that they have acquired in Marine Biology. Their passion for Marine Protected Areas (MPA), Fish Diversity and Sustainability was transcended in this 15 minute group presentation delivered to their fellow 40 classmates, CIEE Staff and teachers. To see it all come together made every excursion, field work day and waking up at 7:30 am for it all - worth it! Students highlighted the differences between National parks and Natural parks and the importance of its biodiversity. They provided real solutions and resources to what these ecosystems are facing such as, contamination and overfishing. Students raised awareness of international and local laws in the Med and dove deeper into issues of climate change. Our students reminded us of the many benefits that MPA’s not only have on marine life, but for people as well.
After their brilliant presentations, we had our farewell party. Host families, students, teachers and CIEE staff came together to wish each other farewell and present our students with superlative awards. To see some students hugging and crying, I knew that they also felt these last three weeks were life changing! Friendships were made, lessons were learned and many many laughs were had! Until next time familia!
