Exploring El Escorial!
We lived like kings and queens during our first weekend in Madrid. We traveled just north of Madrid by train, to the incredible El Escorial. Built in the 16th century, El Escorial was contructed by King Philip II as a burial place for his father, Charles V, it was also a monastery and a palace. The grounds are gorgeous and we got to explore the royal palace, the church, and part of the gardens. We were in awe of the esquisite architechture and beautiful murals throughout the palace. We even saw some works from artists we recognized such as Goya who we have studied in the program. This trip was a great way to learn more history about Spain while appreciating the amazing art that so significant during that time.
