El Corchito and Chicxulub Beach Day
This weekend was a busy weekend for our students. On Saturday, we had a full day trip to El Corchito and Chicxulub Beach. El Corchito is a nature reserve that is home to mangroves, raccoons, coatis, and cenotes. Students loved seeing the animals in their natural habitat and quickly flocked over to take pictures. After some animal watching time, students arrived at the main event, the cenotes. Cenotes are very special in Mayan culture. They are places that help replenish a person's positive energy. They also are said to be pathways to the underworld, Xibalba. More practically, cenotes give Merida about 70% of their drinking water. Students loved swimming in the fresh uncontaminated water of the cenotes.
After the cenotes at El Corchito, students went to lunch at Chicxulub Beach. At the beach, there was a wonderful buffet of typical Yucatecan food for lunch. When everyone had eaten, it was time to enjoy the sand and the sea. Unfortunately the beautiful sunny day was short lived, the sky quickly darkened, and it started to rain. We quickly moved under cover to stay dry. The students didn't let the rain stop their beach day fun. They went back into the water to play in the rain. We had a whirlpool creation in the pool and multiple dunks in the ocean. At the end of the day, we returned home by bus feeling exhausted and refreshed.
