Community Project - Mokolodi Nature Reserve
Yesterday we wanted to really make an impact in the local community and nature reserves. We did this by helping the local staff at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. Because it used to be a farm, there is a huge erosion problem on the reserve. In certain parts of the reserve there are huge gullies that have been caused by years of runoff. To try and prevent it from getting worse, the reserve managers wanted us to help create a dam type structure. They installed a wire cage in the middle of the gully and we filled it with rocks, that way the water could get through but it would stop the soil from running away.
The work was so rewarding and we all came away feeling strong and at peace. There are only 6 full time staff at the Mokolodi reserve and the project we did would have taken them a whole day to complete, but with our help we were able to accomplish the task in 2 hours! Now the staff can use that time to complete other important things. I hope that our work will leave a lasting impact and help the local community, and give a natural place for children of Botswana do enjoy for years to come! Below you will find what some of our students thought about our day!
“It made me feel good because I was helping the environment in a good way. I know later on in life the impact we made will still be there and I can say, 'yea, we did that.'.” - Jovan
“I am glad that something we did is going to have an impact and put what we learned into action!” - Danielle
“I really liked it and it reminded me of work I do at home. I like to do projects outside and not be cooped up inside. I'm sure the work we did we help down the line our dam will help preserve that wonderful area for generations to come!” - Jeremiah
A cool video of everyone working hard
