The Chronicles of Nami Island
A day trip to Nami Island
On our first weekend in Korea, we took a day trip out of Seoul, having our own “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” experience as we took the subway, train, bus, and ferry to travel to Nami Island.
While we’ve enjoyed being in the city, it was wonderful to see mountains, trees, and the beautiful river!
Nami Island is about 60 kilometers from Seoul, situated in the middle of the Han River. The circumference is about 5 kilometers, and there are shady walking and biking trails connecting various activities and facilities. Nami Island is named after General Nami, an important figure from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). He was a courageous soldier and died at age 26. He is reportedly buried at the northern end of Nami Island. Years, ago, Nami Island declared cultural independence, establishing itself as the micro-nation “Naminara Republic, exporting imagination and fairy tales. Upon arrival at the ferry station, visitors must obtain a “visa” (an entry ticket) from “immigration”. You can even change money and buy commemorative stamps! The Naminara Republic is known for providing rest and relaxation to all!
After disembarking from the ferry, we first enjoyed a dak-galbi lunch (spicy stir-fried chicken).
After that, students chose their own adventures--there are walking trails, gardens, bike rentals, and picture book libraries, in addition to restaurants, cafes, and shops. Check out our student videos on bikes and the skybike!

We even took advantage of the misting stations!
The students also loved seeing the animals!!
After several hours of beautiful sunshine on Nami Island, we headed home to rest.
Stay tuned for more Seoul-ful adventures from week 2!
