On our last day in Brussels, some of the students participated in an EU Parliament Simulation game. Each student was assigned a country/political party for the game. They were then presented with two different proposed laws. The first law concerned water usage, and the second law concerned microchip usage. The students then simulated the process of law-making in the EU Parliament. They first met with their political party to research and learn their party's stances and concerns. Next, they gathered information from experts on the proposals. Then, they simulated debate and press conferences before finally coming to the chambers to vote. During the first vote, neither of the proposals passed. But then, new revised proposals were presented for the students to consider, this time against the backdrop of a mock natural disaster. This time, the students passed the revised proposals. I was very impressed with how spirited and knowledgeable the students were in their debates and negotiations!
