After gainig some background knowledge, the students then split up into 3 teams, competeing for bragging rights of "Best Salmorejo," "Best Tortilla," and "Best Teamwork." In one corner we had the caliente team Red Hot Chili Peppers, consisting of Ian, Soledad, Inma, Clarissa, Kennedye, and Grace. In another corner we had team Spice Girls, represented by our awesome girl power squad of Ali, Daisy, Lydia, Anna, and Madison. And in our final corner we had the handsome group of Skyler, Gavin, Levi, Theo, Mia, and max.

The groups began by chopping tomatoes, onions, and potatoes, which would become the main ingredients of both the tortilla and salmorejo. With the chopping done, they blended together the tomatoes, some onions, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, peppers, and bread until they achieved the creamy consistency of salmorejo.

With the onions and potatoes already chopped, the students were well on their way to the perfect tortilla. After the onions and potatoes fried to perfection, they were slowly added to a creamy egg blend and jazzed up with a bit of salt. The mix was poured into a pan and then cooked for about 5 minutes on one side. Then comes the fun part...flipping the tortilla! To achieve this, a plate is added to the top of the pan, then slowly and with the precision of a true professional chef, the pan is flipped and the tortilla is momentarily placed on a plate during transition. The tortilla is then slowly slid back into th pan to cook on the other side for an additional 4 minutes or so.

After all of the food was cooked, the meals were beautifully plated and garnished. Our lovely guides at HablaWorld and Victor, the wonderful CIEE guide, served as the judges. The students all crowded around, waiting with anticipation at the final results.
