ALL THINGS AMERICAN LANGUAGE CENTER

When applying for a teaching position in Morocco through CIEE, you will be placed in an American Language Center or ALC. The ALCs are a branch of the American Cultural Association which is a branch of the U.S. Embassy. They have a partnership with the Moroccan government that facilitates cultural exchange through the different branches.

Locations. There are 12 ALCs throughout the country located in Agadir, Casablanca, El Jadida, Fes, Kenitra, Marrakech, Meknes, Mohammedia, Oujda, Rabat, Tangier and Tetouan. I know for sure that teachers have been placed in Mohammedia, El Jadid, Meknes, and Kenitra. The ALCs are widely known and highly regarding. To locals, it is prestigious to work at the ALC. Not to be biased or anything, but I've heard from so many people that the Mohammedia center is the most beautiful and all-inclusive center that there is!

TEFL Conference. Every fall there is a huge TEFL conference where all the centers get together and hold interactive workshops, insightful lectures, and the most energetic Moroccan party you can imagine. It starts on a Friday night, goes all day Saturday, and then ends on Sunday afternoon. The 2016 and 2017 conferences were held in Tangier, but will be somewhere different next year as they work on a 2-year rotation schedule. It's a fun time in a new city with your teacher friends and you get off of work...win, win!

Face-Off. Face-Off is an annual event where all the ALCs from across the country come together for Public Speaking and Debate competition and then a big event the next day. The day is full of soccer, music, dancing, games, and each center has the opportunity to showcase what they do within the walls of their center as well as what they offers to their local community. Its a jam-packed day, but it was a blast to see the kids having so much fun!
