Tokyo offers students the chance to immerse themselves in Japan’s rich cultural heritage while learning Japanese in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. During the program, students will visit prominent cultural and historical sites in Tokyo to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese traditions, values, and daily life. Every CIEE Faculty-Led & Custom program is a unique combination of high-quality academics and co-curricular activities and excursions that offer real-world experiences to enhance classroom learning.

Lectures

Japanese Language and Culture program in Tokyo includes guest lectures on a variety of topics such as: 

  • The Language of Ritual: Expressions in Tea Ceremony, Festivals, and Daily Life
  • From Edo to Tokyo: The Cultural Transformation of Japan’s Capital City
  • Poverty in Japan
  • The Yakuza: Organized Crime in Japan

Site Visits

Here are just a few of the possibilities for co-curricular activities and excursions in Dublin:  

  • Visit to the Edo-Tokyo Museum, where students will gain a comprehensive understanding of Tokyo’s historical transformation from the Edo period (1603–1868) to the modern metropolis it is today.  
  • Walking tour of the Imperial Palace, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine in some of Tokyo’s most historically rich and culturally layered neighborhoods, gaining insight into both traditional and modern aspects of Japanese life.  
  • Visit to Tsukiji Market which offers students an opportunity to explore Japanese culture through the lens of food, commerce, and daily life.  
  • Various cultural activities. Students will engage in a variety of immersive cultural activities, such as tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, origami workshops and more,  designed to enhance their understanding of Japanese traditions, values and daily life. These hands-on experiences provide meaningful context to the classroom leaning and allow students to connect more deeply with Japanese culture. 
  • A community engagement activity with local Japanese students. This informal meetup will allow students to practice conversational Japanese in a relaxed, real-world setting while also helping local partners practice English.

Every program is tailored to suit the needs of your academic goals – so every program has unique program inclusions and pricing based on your needs. In addition to the programmatic and cultural inclusions above, a standard CIEE custom program includes on-site orientation, 24/7 emergency support, in-country transportation, accommodations, some meals, classroom space, comprehensive insurance coverage and logistical support from our on-site CIEE staff. We also offer marketing templates and other valuable tools to help you get the word out to students.
