A partner. An ally. An advocate.

That’s the kind of support employers deserve from a J-1 visa sponsor and their BridgeUSA program: reliable, responsive, and always in your corner.

And by offering 24/7 support, it ensures host employers have immediate access to subject-matter experts whenever emergency assistance is needed.

“Around‑the‑clock support provides hosts with peace of mind and reinforces the credibility and reliability of us as their partner,” said Angie Gorny, senior director of industry partnerships and placements for BridgeUSA programs at J-1 sponsor organization CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange.

Why 24/7 Support Exists in the First Place

BridgeUSA sponsor requirements include 24/7 support, as set forth by the U.S. Department of State – ultimately ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the participant while on program.

It’s also a feeling of relief for employers who may run into an issue during their participant’s stay in the United States. Your sponsor organization should always be your first point of contact with any concerns.

“For employers, it's about knowing they won’t be alone should something come up unexpectedly,” Gorny said. “Sponsor support means having a partner committed to fast and reliable resolutions about compliance, travel delays, arrival coordination, housing, health‑related issues, or other participant needs – and the 24/7 support is always there in emergencies.”

Regarding staffing and support services, J-1 visa sponsors must ensure that they:

  • Provide adequate staffing and sufficient support services to administer their BridgeUSA exchange visitor program.
  • Require their employees, officers, agents, third parties, volunteers, or other individuals/entities associated with the administration of their BridgeUSA program are adequately qualified, appropriately trained, and comply with program regulations and immigration laws pertaining to the administration of their program(s).

What 24/7 Support Looks Like with CIEE

While 24/7 J-1 visa sponsor support is required by the State Department, a sponsor organization like CIEE may tighten the reins even more. CIEE BridgeUSA is known for Gold Standard Service – aka help that never sleeps.

During our peak seasons, BridgeUSA staff travel across the country to meet with hosts in person, providing hands-on support while their participants are on the program,” said Louisa Creighton Smith, CIEE BridgeUSA host relations director with the Summer Work Travel program. These visits allow us to strengthen relationships, identify, and address challenges early, and ensure that both hosts and participants feel confident and well-supported throughout their exchange experience.”

“In addition, we have a dedicated team focused entirely on supporting participants while they are in the U.S., which in turn, helps us as the visa sponsor, ensure a smooth experience for hosts as well,” she continued. “Our Participant Services team regularly conducts proactive outreach, offering an added layer of support to employers as they operate their businesses and host BridgeUSA participants.”

Intern and Trainee Programs

“CIEE stands out because we combine experience and personalized care,” said Gorny, who works with BridgeUSA Intern and Trainee programs. “As one of the largest and oldest sponsors, we have a dedicated support system – like the 24/7 emergency line, proactive outreach, and culturally competent staff – and provide consistent and responsive communication. You know you’ll get a knowledgeable person quickly if you call us.”

Camp Counselor Program

“Camp is 24/7 – and our support is, as well,” said Zoe Robbins, CIEE BridgeUSA senior manager of camp development with the Camp Counselor program. “We work with CIEE’s participant services team to ensure both camps and participants are fully supported while participants are here on program. That team is an objective third party that’s there so camps and participants feel comfortable and supported.”

Why Trust and Support Matter When Choosing a Sponsor

When it comes to unfamiliar territory – like an employer taking part in a BridgeUSA program for the first time – trust and support are all that matter. Employers need to know that if they reach out for help, CIEE BridgeUSA’s Gold Standard compliance team help ensure a safe and meaningful program.

1. A History of Reliability

“CIEE provides support that is unmatched due to our longevity of working with this program,” Gorny said. “It helps hosts focus on providing great training experiences rather than worrying about administrative or regulatory complexities.”

2. A Commitment to Dedication

“CIEE provides a dedicated team who speaks multiple languages and is trained to handle everything from small questions on SEVIS registration to culture shock to accidents and insurance questions,” Creighton Smith said. “They help hosts as well navigate handling participant issues while they’re in the U.S.”

3. More Than the Minimum

“Our goal is to have a program that goes above and beyond U.S. Department of State expectations,” Robbins said. “It means building a relationship with the camps so they have someone to call that they’ve been working with all season.”
