My Experience Over The Past 2 Weeks

I have had some great experiences during my time here in Berlin. From visiting the Berlin wall and the technical institute to the morning classes about Intercultural communication. My favorite place that we visited was the Technische Universitat because we got to play with circuits and, being an engineering major, this is something that I really enjoy. Building a synthesizer is something that I have never done before so that was really fun for me. My least favorite part was probably the concentration camp because I was really uncomfortable the whole time. I think it is something that should have been optional just becasue I feel like I could have gotten the same information from photos instead of having to go right next to a gas chamber where tens of thousands of poeple were murdered. Something that caused me to shift my understanding was seeing how openly Germans discuss the Holocaust. When I first hear that our group would be visiting a concentration camp, I wondered why they hadn't been destroyed years prior. After more discussion, I realized that the reason they didn't destroy the camps is because they don't want to forget. They instead acknowledge that this time happened and recognize that it was wrong. In Germany, they teach the kids about the Holocaust and teach them that it was wrong. This is very different than how Americans teach their youth about slavery. Americans, in many ways, try and cover up the fact that slavery happened and try to ignore and surpress the racist attitudes of the people. Seeing the way that Germans talk about the Holocaust really opened my eyes to the possibilities of what America could be like in the future. I think that beause of the open style of communication here in Germany, it made for a more culturally inclusive and open environment which was very refreshing.
