Every CIEE Faculty-Led & Custom program is a unique combination of high-quality academics and co-curricular activities and excursions that offer real-world experiences to enhance classroom learning.
Destination
Rabat offers a unique opportunity to engage with a dynamic blend of tradition and modernity in a culturally rich and politically significant setting. As Morocco’s capital, Rabat is home to key national institutions, contemporary art galleries, historic architecture, and vibrant artisan communities. It provides a living classroom where students can explore everything from intricate zellige tilework and calligraphy to cutting-edge fashion and graphic design. Rabat’s coastal location, international outlook, and UNESCO-recognized heritage make it an ideal hub for examining how Moroccan identity is expressed through art in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Lectures
The Art & Design program in Rabat includes guest lectures on a variety of topics such as:
- Amazigh Culture and Indigenous Art in Morocco
- Comparative Moroccan Architecture from the Medina to the Ville Nouvelle
- Islamic Religious Art and Sacred Design

Site Visits
Here are just a few of the possibilities for co-curricular activities and excursions in Rabat:
- Traditional Artisan Workshop. Students will have the unparalleled opportunity to learn art forms such as zellig (tiles) and fkhar (pottery) firsthand from craftsmen in the heart of Rabat.
- Walking Architectural Tour to learn how Rabat’s architecture reflects its unique history of Islamization, French colonization, and modern transition.
- Visit to an NGO focused on supporting and promoting Moroccan art in all forms to learn about the art scene in Rabat and meet local artists.
- Day trip to Casablanca for a guided tour of Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Africa and a masterpiece of Moroccan Islamic art and design.
- Excursion to Marrakech to visit national and international educational, industry, and cultural organizations dedicated to the arts.
