My American Internship: Selen P. of Türkiye
Our "My American Internship" series features CIEE BridgeUSA participants who submitted entries to our photo essay contest. Selen P. of Türkiye served as a culinary intern at the Buffalo Marriott at Lecom Harborcenter in Buffalo, New York.
Living and working in Buffalo as part of the CIEE BridgeUSA Intern program has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. My internship in a professional kitchen allowed me to grow not only as a pastry chef but also as a person. Each day brought new techniques, fast-paced challenges, and a sense of pride in creating something with my own hands.
Outside of work, I made the most of my time in the U.S. I took a breathtaking boat tour at Niagara Falls, visited my dream destination – Carlo's Bakery – and explored fascinating museums and aquariums where I learned things I had never seen or known before. I hiked through beautiful trails surrounded by nature and even found joy in simple moments, like playing in parks and feeling like a kid again.
I also traveled to incredible places such as the Finger Lakes (which completely stole my heart), New York City, Boston, and other parts of Massachusetts. These trips allowed me to experience both the vibrant city life and the peacefulness of nature. This journey didn’t end with the internship – after completing the program, I was honored to receive job offers from several high-end restaurants. It made me realize how far I’ve come and how many doors this opportunity has opened for me.
Thanks to CIEE, I’ve created unforgettable memories, discovered new passions, and made lasting friendships. This program has changed my life, and I’m deeply grateful for the experience.
