Frederick Douglass-Daniel O’Connell Global Interns Meet Taoiseach Micheál Martin
This past Tuesday, the Frederick Douglass–Daniel O’Connell (FDDO) Global Interns were honored to participate in the O’Connell 250 Symposium: Liberty, Democracy, and the Struggle for Human Rights held at Trinity College Dublin. During the keynote session titled "The Life and Global Legacies of Daniel O'Connell," the students heard from FDDO program historian Prof. Christine Kinealy and An Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheál Martin, T.D., where a commemorative stamp was unveiled marking the 250th Anniversary of Daniel O'Connell's birth.
At the conclusion, members of the 2025 FDDO cohort were invited to join An Taoiseach for a photo.
"As a Frederick Douglass–Daniel O’Connell Global Fellow, sponsored by the Government of Ireland and the African-American Irish Diaspora Network, it was especially meaningful to hear Professor Christine Kinealy speak on the historical alliance between Daniel O’Connell and Frederick Douglass in the fight against slavery. Learning about Ireland’s contribution to African American freedom through this powerful connection was incredibly moving," said Johnathan Burch, a 2025 Douglass-O'Connell Global Intern.
