About Our Program Fees

CIEE, a non-profit organization, has been sending university graduates abroad to teach English since 1997. Our program in Thailand includes your visa fee, orientation on arrival, emergency insurance, and a high level of support throughout your experience (see all features below). To cover those costs, there is a program fee: $1,750 for one semester, or $1,950 for two semesters. Once we accept your application, you’ll make a first payment of $500 to reserve your spot ($1,000 for programs with TEFL). The remaining balance of the program fee is due a few months later after you accept a job offer from a Thai school. CIEE alumni automatically receive a 10% discount!

Job Description

As a lead classroom teacher, you’ll focus on improving the conversational English skills of your eager students with creative classroom exercises and educational games.

Often, positions open to teach other subjects, such as math, science, technology, computers, social studies, and physical education. Candidates with educational backgrounds in these areas are encouraged to note a willingness to teach subjects other than English on their applications. Also conducted in English, these classes can be smaller than English language classes, and pay a higher monthly salary of 30,000 to 33,000 baht/month.

This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and promote international goodwill while you earn money to support yourself. The cost of living in Thailand is quite reasonable, so your salary will go a long way.

Compensation

CIEE Teach in Thailand participants teaching English earn 28,000 baht (approx. $850)/month plus housing.  Willingness to teach subjects other than English as well as prior teaching experience often results in a higher monthly salary.  All program participants enjoy provided accommodations.

Teachers can earn 30,000 baht (approx. $900)/month plus housing by having a TEFL certificate, a Bachelor’s degree in a hard science or math (and teaching those subjects), or by teaching non-English subjects.

Teachers with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education earn a salary of 33,000 baht (approx. $1,000)/month plus housing.

These salaries are generous in local terms – about twice what local teachers earn – and your wages can easily finance independent travel after the semester ends. In addition, full-year Teach in Thailand participants earn a completion bonus of 20,000 baht to offset return airfare upon successful completion of contract.

  • Schools

Positions are available at private and public partner schools across Thailand. Most placements are available in the central, eastern, and northern regions of the country; while positions in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the southern provinces are limited and typically more competitive. We do not place teachers in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun, and Songkhla.

You can request placement at a particular level and location, but keep in mind that placements are driven by demand, so we cannot guarantee that requests will be met.

  • Workload

A typical teaching load is 20-25 classes per week, depending on the school. In addition to time in the classroom, participants are expected to devote time to class planning, presentations, faculty meetings, and a range of extracurricular activities. Participants should expect a 40-hour workweek.

This allows plenty of opportunity to travel, explore the countryside, and enjoy Thai culture. The Teach in Thailand program midyear (October) entry option also gives you a one- to two-month break in the middle of the program that you can use to travel.
