A trip to Portugal with CIEE is an adventure into a once-powerful seafaring empire, which has evolved into a charming, friendly, and laid-back destination. Framed by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and mountains along its border with Spain, Portugal offers superb natural beauty and diversions, as well as historical cities and relaxing beaches. Some of the most popular attractions of Portuguese culture are the haunting Fado music, fresh seafood, many Portuguese wines, and the amazing depth of history and experience of the Portuguese people.

The communities where the host schools are located are likely to be smaller towns, but public transportation is extensive and efficient and it will be easy for you to go exploring throughout the country, and even Europe.

Job Description

As a native English speaker with insight into U.S. culture, you’ll be responsible for providing cultural insights to your students and improving their English communication skills. You may teach entire classes or small groups of students, but you’ll never be left alone with an entire class, nor will you be responsible for grading, discipline, or the independent supervision of students.

The position is not only for teaching in English classes, but also to put together English activities and lessons in other subjects that are normally taught in Portuguese, such as history, art, social studies/civics, music, and physical education. This is for maximizing the students’ exposure to English, outside of their normal English class. In the higher grades, you may be asked to teach a conversation class or prepare students for exams that test their English proficiency. In some schools, you may teach English to members of the staff. Exact responsibilities vary according to each individual school.

Your students will be young children who study at a public, bilingual school. They will likely be more comfortable with reading and writing in English and you will have the chance to build their confidence with speaking English. Through informal tutoring, you’ll also have the opportunity to help your host family and colleagues at the host school sharpen their English skills.

For your hard work as a highly valued volunteer, you'll receive:

  • Cost-free accommodations with a volunteer host family in your community
  • Two meals a day provided by your volunteer host family
  • Informal Portuguese tutoring provided by your school

  • Schools

The schools where you’ll teach are public schools administered by the Ministry of Education in Portugal. Location and age-group preferences will be considered by CIEE, but placements will be contingent on available schools.

  • Workload

12 hours per week of volunteer time in a public school
