Morocco - The Land of Blue Cities and Endless Culture

Morocco is a place like ANY other I have visited. The food is incredible, the views are insane, and the culture is rich. Here are some tips before planning your trip:

  • Find a travel group. Traveling with a group in Morocco is essential because you will very clearly be a tourist (believe me you will stick out) and this puts you at risk of petty thieves, etc. Plus travleing in a group allows you to be provided with transportation and room/board so you don't have to figure those out on you own.
  • Public transportation is not as accessible as it is in Madrid/other European cities. We were lucky enough to travel around Tangier and Chefchaoue (the most unique city you will ever experience) because we traveled with a group who provided a private bus to and from the cities.
  • A lot of people warned me about eating the food in Morocco because Moroccon's immune systems are different from North Americans/Europeans. This wasn't true at all. I was able to experience true Moroccon cuisine while still avoiding any stomach bugs. But on the same note, DO NOT DRINK THE WATER. You can get really sick! Use bottled water even to brush your teeth.
  • Bring your own toilet paper. For real. Moroccons will try to charge you for it. Also if you see a bathroom you dont have to pay to use, hop on it. It's pretty rare.
  • Girls- bring a scarf to wrap your head in just in case you enter a religious/sacred place. I never had to wear mine but I carried it around with me everywhere I went. You will also want to cover up. There are a lot of cat-callers probably because they're not used to seeing women wear short shorts and tank tops. Most of us wore loose, flowey pants and t-shirts to avoid any unwanted attention.
  • Endulge yourself in the culture! As someone who had never traveled outside Europe/North America I definitely experienced a little culture shock. Don't be freaked out or judgemental, just experience it for all that it is. It was a pretty eye opening experience.
  • Your European phone plan will NOT work. Get ready to put your phone on airplane mode and truly live in the moment, until you get back to your hotel and connect to the horrendous wifi of course.

Check out the photos above to get a taste of Morocco, but of course you have to go see this beautiful place for yourself.
