Solo Trip to Ericeira, Portugal: A Surf Lover’s Dream
Your Guide to Portugal’s Hidden Surf Town
Hello! I recently had the opportunity to spend a long weekend in Ericeira, Portugal. This charming town isn’t typically one of the main cities you hear about, but it’s a hidden gem located about 45 minutes north of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. Ericeira is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a chill, surf-oriented vibe. With stunning beaches, cute cafés, and a relaxed atmosphere, you can’t go wrong choosing Ericeira for your next weekend getaway.
Full of expats and travelers from all over the world, Ericeira has a collective, welcoming vibe that makes it easy to meet like-minded people and make new friendships. Here’s everything you need to know for a successful trip to Portugal’s surf gem.
Transportation
Flying into Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is the easiest option. From the airport, follow signs to the metro station underground:
- Take the Red Line toward São Sebastião.
- Get off at Saldanha and transfer to the Green Line toward Odivelas.
- Ride until Campo Grande, where you can board either the 2801 or 2803 bus to Ericeira.
The whole trip usually takes 1–2 hours. Once in Ericeira, you can take a short walk, Uber, Bolt, or another bus to your hostel.
Accommodation
I stayed at the Ericeira Destination Hostel, a chill and casual spot with great breakfast and a friendly, social vibe. The close quarters encouraged guests to get to know one another, and I met some amazing people. They also welcome volunteers through Worldpackers, making it a great option for travelers looking for a longer stay.
The location is ideal for the beach rather than the town center — about a 50-minute walk to the center and 15 minutes to the main surf beach. Other hostels worth considering include:
- WOT Ericeira Surf Hostel
- Ericeira Surf Camp & Hostel

Beaches
I was within walking distance of Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas, the main surf beach in Ericeira. I was lucky enough to be there during the WSL Challenger Series (September 29 – October 5). Kauli Vaast won for the men, and Tya Zebrowski won for the women — both representing France. Watching the competition was an unforgettable experience!
Other notable beaches for sunbathing and relaxing include:
- Praia dos Pescadores
- Praia do Sul
Foz do Lizandro
For surfing, here are some of the top spots:
- Coxos – advanced; hollow right-hand barrel
- Matadouro – intermediate; reef break
- Pedra Branca & Reef – advanced; challenging reef waves
Cafés
Ericeira has some fantastic cafés to enjoy a break or light meal:
- Mothers Café – fresh treats, coffee, coworking space, and a small shopping area. Perfect for a mid-day pause.
- Tiger & Chick – a small café with a lively vibe. Known for banana bread, but their carrot cake is also excellent.
Dear Rose Café – homey and welcoming, offering amazing vegan treats and beautiful local art.
