CIEE Security Alert - Lisbon

Emergency crews responding after funicular accident leaves 15 dead and 18 injured in Lisbon, Portugal, Sept. 3.

As of the evening of Sept. 3, emergency personnel are continuing their response to the derailment of Lisbon's Gloria Funicular. The incident occurred when the car jumped its track and fell a significant distance, overturning on Avenida da Liberdade. As of 20:10 (local time), authorities were reporting that at least 15 people had died and 18 others were injured in the accident. It remains unclear how many of the victims were passengers on the funicular and how many were on the ground. Casualty figures could rise in the coming hours.

CIEE has confirmed the safety of all CIEE Lisbon participants. At this time, we have no reports that any CIEE participants have been impacted by this incident.
