CIEE Security Alert - Japan
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula around 11:24am on July 30th (local time), followed in succession by multiple tremors.
The tremblor has triggered a tsunami warning for the coast of Japan. Authorities in Japan have issued Level 5 black emergency safety evacuation orders (on a five-tier scale) for Urakawa Town in Hokkaido Prefecture. Level 4 purple evacuation orders are in place for coastal areas in Aichi, Aomori, Chiba, Ehime, Kanagawa, Kochi, Fukushima, Hyogo, Iwate, Mie, Miyagi, Miyazaki, Okayama, Okinawa, Shizuoka, Tokushima, and Wakayama prefectures.
CIEE has confirmed the safety of all CIEE Japan participants. As this is a developing situation, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety.
