Sheron Long

Founder of Hampton-Brown Educational Publishing Company (Retired) and the Global Navigator Scholarship Program at CIEE Carmel, CA

Biography

  • The impact of a high school study abroad experience in Mexico inspired Sheron Long to pursue a career in education characterized by a commitment to developing bilingualism, global mindsets, and intercultural competencies in students. In 2015, she partnered with CIEE to create Global Navigator Programs that involve high school students in life-changing summer study abroad experiences. Each year, she provides over 1,000 scholarships to deserving students.

Previously, Sheron taught Spanish at the middle-school level. Later, she founded Hampton-Brown, a K–12 educational publisher of language and literacy materials for the linguistically and culturally diverse classroom. She directed the company for almost 30 years. During that time, Hampton-Brown grew to become a leading U.S. publisher, particularly in the English as a Second Language curriculum, and was acquired by National Geographic.

Sheron finds it fascinating to hear the stories of Global Navigators who have changed their lives and perspectives through the CIEE summer abroad programs and especially enjoys hearing them express their ideas in their second languages.
